Turkey picked up a major 4-2 victory over the Netherlands in a dramatic World Cup qualifier in Istanbul.
The hosts’ triumph kicked off after 15 minutes when captain Burak Yilmaz fired a shot from the edge of the box and got a deflection off Matthijs de Ligt that confused Tim Krul.
The Oranje, though, complained for a handball by Okay Yokusla inside Ugurcan Cakir’s box at the build-up.
Burak doubled the Crescent-Stars’ lead with a penalty on 34 minutes after Donyell Malen carelessly fouled Yokusla inside the box.
Holland had a lot more complaints at half-time as they claim De Ligt’s header went over the goaline before being cleared by Yokusla.
Turkey started the second half on the right foot as they trippled their lead with a wonderful curling shot by Hakan Calhanoglu just a few seconds after the referee’s whistle.
Just when it looked like the Netherlands were out for the count they fought back with two goals in just one minute thanks to a wonderful turn by Davy Klaassen and a lucky deflection off Luuk de Jong.
However, Burak ended Holland’s hopes of a late comeback nine minutes before full-time with a magnficent free-kick that completed his hat-trick.
Memphis Depay had the chance of netting a third for his team in the last minute of stoppage time but was denied by Cakir.
That’s all from here in Istanbul, have a lovely evening!
